| Note 1 | Six 'books' of Secrets, translated, as specified in the title, from Italian into French. First known French edition. |
| Note 2 | The first known Italian editions (Ferguson nos. 1, 2, 3) also date from 1557. Very likely Plantin followed a somewhat older publication (1555 or 1556 ? Brunet quotes an edition of 1555, Venice, Sigismondo Bordogna; its existence is, however, doubted by Ferguson). It is not clear if the typographer commissioned the French translation or had it copied from an already printed version (in which case, this first French publication was also lost). The dedicatory letter, signed by Plantin, dated 15 October 1557, and addressed to Emmanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoie, at the time Governor-General of the Netherlands, is not explicit on the matter. The carefully turned phrases give the impression that Plantin took the initiative, and that, if he didn't made the translation himself, he at least laboured on the French text. |
| Note 3 | The first copies were sold in October and November 1557 (Arch. 38, folio 9 verso: 1 copy to the 'Poule Grasse' [Birckman, Antwerp], 15 October 1558 [= for 1557]; Arch. 38, folio 7 verso: 4 copies to Guillaume Simon, Antwerp, 6 November 1557). Larger shipments were sent in February 1558 to Paris (75 copies to Martin le Jeune; 25 to the widow l'Angelier; 100 to an unnamed Parisian bookseller: Arch. 34, pages 20 and 21) and in March 1558 to Frankfurt (Arch. 34, page 22: 100 copies). |
