Note 1 | The reason why Plantin took the trouble to make look a number of copies of his 1578 Horatius edition as if they were printed in 1579 is not quite clear. Probably (as can be surmised from similar cases) this has something to do with the sale at the Frankfurt Fairs: the edition came out in October 1578, missing, consequently, the September Fair; perhaps Plantin thought it indicated to 'arrange' part of the edition for the sale on the Lent Fair of 1579. |
