Note 1 |
This edition was published in three versions as described in Ms. 296, folio 13v: 'In 8⁰ cum fig. et ornamentis aeneis' (= with illustrations and borders in copper engraving) (florins Carolus guilders 8)', 'In 8⁰ cum fig[uris] aeneis et ornamentis ligneis' (= with copper engraving-illustrations and woodcut-borders) (florins Carolus guilders 2), 'In 8⁰ figuris et ornamentis ligneis' (= with woodcut-illustrations and borders) (florins Carolus guilders 1). Only copies in the last version are known. |
Note 2 |
In a letter to de Çayas, 12 January 1573, Plantin affirms that 'las horas in 8⁰ con orlas de madera' will be finished shortly (Corr., III, no. 451, page 275). For some reason, however, only a limited number of copies were shipped to Spain and that as late as 12 November 1573: only 12 'Horȩ in 8⁰ cum vig[nettes] (= borders) et fig[ures] de cuivre', worth 6 florins Carolus guilders 10 stuivers a piece. The shipment included also some copies in de luxe-bindings to be presented to Philip II (5 with copper engravings and 2 with woodcut-illustrations) and de Virbiesca (1 with copper engravings and 2 with copper engraving-illustrations and woodcut-borders) (Arch. 22, folio 23r). The remaining copies must have been sold by Plantin to his regular customers. |
Note 3 |
In Plantin's correspondence in those months mention is often made of 'Heures grandes', but this very likely refers to the in 4⁰ edition of 1573 (see preceding no.). |
