Note 1 | Reprint of the preceding nos., with some changes. Contains: Ciceronis sententiarum liber I (pages 1-183); Apophthegmata [liber II] (184-206); Parabolae…[liber III] (209-222); Piae sententiae…[liber IV] (225-235); Illustres quaedam sententiae…(236-264); Sententiae Terentianae (265-280); Appendix sententiarum…(281-332); De philosophorum doctrina libellus ex Cicerone (335-416); Sententiae collectaneae…ex Demosthenis…(417-467); Ex Demosthenis…similia (468-478). |
Note 2 | Shortly after having finished the 1564-edition Plantin must have decided to bring on the market a new corrected version: on 9 September 1564 was paid to Quentin Stenhartsius the sum of 3 florins Carolus guilders 10 stuivers 'sur la correction de Sent. Cic. et Demost.' (Arch. 31, folio 42 verso). In the note to the reader of the 1567-edition (page [2]) the proud typographer (C.P. = Christophorus Plantinus) affirms: 'Habes hunc librum, amice lector, si unquam antea castigatum, nunc sane, sublatis plus mille mendis (adeo ut absque ulla omnino offensa, expeditissime utilissimeque legi possit) castigatissimum…'. |
Note 3 | For some reason, however, the printing was postponed for a couple of years - and for some reason the cost-accounting note in Arch. 4 remained incomplete: on 8 September 1566 the payment to pressmen and compositors is entered of 6 florins Carolus guilders for the first two sheets, and beneath it is written the mention '42 rames' - and that is all (Arch. 4, folio 103 verso). |
Note 4 | The colophon makes it clear that the edition was finally finished on 31 October 1566. |
Note 5 | In M 296, folio 17 verso, is listed: '[Sentent. Cic. et Demosth. in 16⁰] eadem A⁰ -, f[euilles] 15, [price:] stuivers 3'. It refers very likely to this 1567-publication as it has 15½ sheets (15 sheets without the introductory part), whilst the other editions have 16 sheets. |
