| Note 2 | The translator is on the title-page, in the dedicatory, and in the letter to the reader only cited by the initials 'M.A.G.'. At the end, in the epigram 'made for this purpose by the translator, of which the first letters comprehend the name', these first letters form Nostravincamus, an anagram for Marcus Antonius. This same Marcus Antonius did the Dutch translation of the Emblemata of Sambucus (see no. cp011576) and is in this context quoted as 'Marc Antoine van Diest' and 'Marc Antoine fils de Gilles van Diest' (the latter being Plantin's colleague, the Antwerp printer and bookseller Egidius Coppens van Diest). |
| Note 3 | This Dutch translation has been reprinted, with an useful introduction by Max Rooses, in 1902 (De emblemata van Hadrianus Junius. Herdruk van de Plantijnsche uitgave van de oorspronkelijke houtsneden afgedrukt, Antwerp, Uitgaven van het Museum Plantin - Moretus). This reprint, however, follows the 1575-edition (see following no.). |
| Note 4 | In a letter of 1565 Hadrianus Junius suggested to Plantin to have the Emblemata translated in 'our language' by Theodericus Volcardus (Dirk Volckertsz. Coornhert) (Corr., III, no. 335), but for one reason or another Marcus Antonius van Diest was finally preferred. |
