Note 1 | Translation into Dutch by Philip Numan (town-clerk of Brussels in 1583, died 20 February 1617; cf. Biographie Nationale [de Belgique], 16, 1901, Columns 1-11) of the first two volumns of the Guia de peccadores of Ludovicus Granatensis (cf. also no. 1608) (pages 13-221), with some additional homilies by other religious authorities, namely a treatise by Thomas de Villanova, archbishop of Valencia (Eenen corten reghel van christelijck leven, den welcken de seer Eer. Vader, Broeder Thomas de Villanova, aertsbisschop van Valentien gesonden heeft aen een edel ende deuchdigh personnagie: pages 221-226), and one by Joannes Davilla (Eenen anderen corten christelijcken reghel, door den Eer. Vader Ian Davila: pages 226-232), and finally some sermons and explanations from Bible-texts (Sermon on the Mountain: pages 232-249; Sermon of the Last Supper: 249-253; Explanation of some chapters of the Epistles of St. Paul: 253-266). |
Note 2 | In the note of the translator to the reader, Numan explains that he started translating this Dutch version from the French translation of Pauwels du Mont of Douai, issued some 11 or 12 years ago (Douai, J. Bogard, 1574: cf. Palau y Dulcet, 6, page 362, no. 107659; reprints in 1585 at Lyons, and in 1586 at Paris: cf. Palau y Dulcet). The troubles in the Netherlands interrupted for some time his work, but, after the surrender of Brussels to the Catholic forces, he decided to continue and finish 'this small jewel to foster the salvation of all sincere Christians'. |
Note 3 | Listed in M 296, folio 11r (Leydtsman der sondaren Lod. Granatensis, 8º, aº 88, f[euilles] 17, [price:] stuivers 6), and M 321. |
