Note 1 | Extracts from the works of Seneca. |
Note 2 | Translated from Latin into Spanish by Juan Martin Cordero, a Spanish student, who, at that moment, was residing in Antwerp, where he earned his living as a proof-reader for Plantin's Antwerp colleague Martin Nutius. Cordero translated some ten works into Spanish, which were printed between 1554 and 1561 in Antwerp; one - the work described here - by Plantin (cf. Peeters-Fontainas, 'Extrait des Mémoires…'). |
Note 3 | In his Mémoires Cordero states that he made the translation 'which my friend Plantin printed and it was the first book he printed in Antwerp' (cf. Peeters-Fontainas, op. cit., page 71). The Flores de Seneca figures indeed in the first privilege obtained by Plantin, 5 April 1555, the second in a list of three works. It is generally accepted that Bruto, La institutione di una fanciulla nata nobilmente (see cp011258), is in fact the very first book issued by the Plantin Press, but that the Flores de Seneca is the first to have shown Plantin's printer's mark. To judge from the type used, it seems, however, that if Bruto's La institutione was printed by Plantin for his Antwerp colleague, Bellerus (whose printer's mark is on the title-page), the Flores de Seneca, showing Plantin's printer's mark, has in fact been printed by another typographer, Plantin being only the publisher. For a discussion of the problem: L. Voet, The Golden Compasses, I, pages 17-18. |
Note 4 | Some sales are noted in the Plantinian archives; the earliest on 9 August 1555. Cf. Arch. 34, pages 3 (5 August 1556: 36 copies 'pour envoyer à Paris'), 9 (9 November 1556: 6, worth 1 florins Carolus guilders 1 stuivers, to Jehan Mallet, Rouen), 10 (c. 9 November 1556: 6, worth 18 stuivers, to Jehan Braque), 11 (14 November 1556: 12, worth 1 florins Carolus guilders 16 stuivers, to Arnould Langelier, Paris); Arch. 38, folios 1 verso (29 January 1558: 2 bound copies to Jan Steelsius), 4 verso (9 August 1555: 5 bound copies to Martin Nutius), 7 verso (to Guillaume Symon: 2 bound copies on 24 January 1556, and 2 other bound copies on 2 January 1558), 9 verso (2 [?] January 1558: 2 bound copies to 'la Poule Grasse' [= Birckman, Antwerp]). |
Note 5 | Listed in M 296, folio 7 recto (Flores de seneca, in 8⁰, hispan., a⁰ 1555, f[euilles] 22, [price:] stuivers 3), and M 164, folio 12 verso. |
