Note 1 | Reprint of the 1575-edition, published at the initiative and the expenses of Plantin. Cf. his letter to Buyssetius in Rome, 10 December 1579 (Correspondance de C. Plantin, V, no. 851, page 115), where, among the list of the works recently printed by his press, figures 'Manuale Navarri in 8⁰ magno, quod hic summopere desiderarentur exemplaria quae sunt avidiss. expetita et fere distracta, in quo si peccavi veniam peto nec paenitentiam detrectabo quam rogo ut mihi impetres et si maneat in sententia polliceor me non recusurum'. |
Note 2 | In a previous letter to Buyssetius, 14 March 1579 (Correspondance de C. Plantin, V, no. 825), Plantin had inquired about the health of Azpilcueta and asked if the theologian had made additions to his Manuale ('Cupio scire qui valeat D. Navarrus et an aliquid suo Manuali confessariorum addiderit'). It is not very likely that the printer had direct dealings with Azpilcueta about the subject or received the authorization of the theologian to reprint the work (cf. the letter to Buyssetius, 10 December 1579: Correspondance de C. Plantin, V, no. 851, page 107). Later, in 1581, Plantin received a rather angry letter from Azpilcueta, to which he replied at length on 22 July 1581 (Correspondance de C. Plantin, V, no. 936). The printer must have been accused of having shipped, against the agreements, copies of the Manuale to Spain. It is, however, not very clear if the accusation applies to the 1575-, to the 1579-edition, or to both. |
Note 3 | Listed in M 296, folio 11 verso ([Manuale Navarri de Casibus Conscientia] 8⁰, 1579, f[euilles] 54, [price:] stuivers 20). |
Note 4 | In the same year 1579 the Manuale was reprinted at Venice, apud Juntas, and at Cologne, ex officina Jo. Bellini. |
