Note 1 | Greek text of Joannes Chrysostomus, De virginitate liber, edited by Joannes Livineus, with Latin translation by the same scholar. |
Note 2 | In the dedicatory Livineus explains that when some years ago he received the ‘book’ of Gregorius Nyssenus on virginity from Cardinal Caraffa’s Vatican Library (in order to have it published by Plantin, 1574: see no. cp013051), he decided to join to it that other treatise on virginity by Joannes Chrysostomus. Partly on the advice of his friends, partly to hasten the enterprise, he at first had only the intention to edit the Greek text and to follow for the Latin translation the text of Pogianus (see preceding no.). He preferred finally, however, to make a new translation. |
Note 3 | Plantin must originally have had the idea to publish also in 1574/75 the epistles of Joannes Chrysostomus, either to print them together with the De virginitate liber or to issue them separately. Cf. letter of M. Morillon to Cardinal Granvelle, 31 January 1574 (Suppl. The project did not materialize. |
Note 4 | The privilege was obtained through the intermediary of Pierre de la Tombe, bookseller at Brussels (cf. his letter to Plantin, 6 December [1574]: Corr., IV, no. 590). |
Note 5 | Listed in M 296, folio 3r (Chrysostomus de virginitate grecolat., 4º, f[euilles] —, [price:] stuivers 7), and M 164, folio 6r. |
