| Note 3 | In the publication itself the name of the translator is not explicitly stated; only his initials (M.A.G.) are given. He is to be identified with Marcus Antonius van Diest or Gillis, son of the Antwerp printer Aegidius (Gillis) Coppens van Diest, who in 1567 also provided the Dutch translation of the Emblemata of Hadrianus Junius (see no. cp011647). | Note 4 | The translator received a fee of 27 florins Carolus guilders 18 stuivers On 15 September 1564 'Marc Antoine van Diest' was paid 'sur la traduction en flameng [des Emblesmes de Sambucus]' 3 florins Carolus guilders 18 stuivers (Arch. 3, folio 17v). This was only an advance: when the translation was finished 'Marc Antoine van Diest, fils de Gilles van Diest' received another 24 florins Carolus guilders, noted on 1 February 1566 (Arch. 3, folio 43v). |
