| Note 1 | Poems regarding the transfer of the relics of St. Leocadia from St. Ghislain (near Mons, Hainaut) to Toledo. The saint was martyrized at Toledo in 304. According to tradition, at the invasion of the Arabs, her remains were removed to France. They arrived in 714 at the Abbey of St. Ghislain. When in 1581 the Calvinists profaned the reliquary, great pressure was exerced by the Spanish authorities upon the monks to give the relics back to Spain. In January 1583 St. Ghislain finally ceded. On 11 October of that year St. Leocadia started the long way back which, over Trente and Rome, would bring her to Toledo where she was received with great pomp on 26 April 1587. |

| Note 4 | The printing was finished in November 1587. On the 27th of that month Plantin mailed to the Bishop of Ypres 3 copies of a 'fasciculus' with verses which Pantinus had requested the typographer to print, asking at the same time to forward the copies to the Bishop of Ypres (Correspondance de C. Plantin, VIII-IX, no. 1327). The same day he wrote to Pantinus on the same subject, but in a not very clear way: 'Acceptis tuis illico Versus tuos imprimi curavi quorum 6 exemplaria Rev.mo Yprensi cum tuis ad eum misi, tibi hic duo, plura non ausus quod subodorari mihi videar postas non libenter ferre fasciculos majusculos' (Ibidem,no. 1329). This can mean that Plantin sent to the Bishop of Ypres 6 copies intended for the author and to be forwarded by the bishop, and directly to Pantinus only 2 copies because the postmaster was not willing to accept heavy parcels for Spain. |
