| Note 1 | Manual for writing Latin letters. The first edition seems to be the one published by A. Tilenius Brechtanus, Antwerp, 1571, followed by re-editions: in 1574, Antwerp; in 1580, Leiden (or Lyons); in 1581 and 1586, Cologne (Nauwelaerts, 'Bijdrage tot de bibliographie van S. Verepaeus', page 86). |
| Note 2 | In a letter of 20-23 November 1587 to Verepaeus (Corr., VIII-IX, no. 1325) Plantin explains that the Jesuits, which used in their schools Verepaeus's grammar, also had urged him to print his 'liber de epistolis conscribendis' after a copy sent to him by the Jesuit College (?) of St. Omer (the text reads: 'Audomaropolenses'). Plantin refused to do it without the consent of the author and A. Tilenius. |
| Note 3 | This consent must have been given quickly: on 3 March 1588 J. Moretus wrote to Verepaeus (Corr., VIII-IX, no. 1352) that he is mailing with the same letter the first sheet of the Epistolae tuae, and that he will continue until the end. |
| Note 4 | In the light of this letter the mention of a Plantinian edition in 1581 by Paquot and RDB, page 229 (1581, no. 29) cannot be accepted (cf. Nauwelaerts, op. cit., page 87). |
