Note 1 | Theological treatise on the Ten Commandments. First edition. |
Note 2 | As duly noted in the colophon the work was printed by Joannes Masius at Louvain at the expenses of Plantin and with the latter's type (cf. Rooses, Musée, page 165). Arch. 31, folio 166, gives some details about the transactions between Plantin and Masius on this particular publication: at the date of 13 June [1573] is noted that Masius had printed 35 sheets 'in Decalogum Matthaei felisii gardiani Mechliniensis'. For each sheet 2 reams of paper were used (which means that 1,000 copies were printed), making a total of 70 reams. At 1 florins Carolus guilders 2 stuivers per ream (= the costs for printing; the paper itself must have been supplied by Plantin), Plantin had to pay Masius 77 florins Carolus guilders Somewhat further in the text, following an entry dated 7 July [1573], Plantin notes 'Il a de moy 153 Catholica praeceptorum Decalogi Explicatio', without specifying what this means exactly (if for instance Masius kept these 153 copies to sell them in his own bookshop, and if in this case their value was to be deducted from the sum Plantin had to pay the Louvain typographer). |
Note 3 | The publication contains 37½ sheets. On Masius's account are only entered 35 sheets. This can mean that 2½ sheets were actually printed in Plantin's Officina at Antwerp. |
Note 4 | The work was finished in 1573 and a number of copies have a title-page bearing that year. For some reason, however, other copies received a title-page with the year 1574 (see following no.). |
Note 5 | Listed in M 296, folio 6v (Felisius in Decalogum, 8⁰, f[euilles] 37½, [price:] stuivers 9½, a⁰ -), and Ms. 164, folio 13v. |
