Note 1 | Latin dialogues for use in the schools. |
Note 2 | The first edition was published in Paris, G. Buon, 1554, and often reprinted. According to the approbatio of Zibertus Dunghen the Plantin-text follows the Paris-edition of Gabriel Buon, 1568. In fact it must have been a somewhat adapted version for use in Dutch schools as the text includes not only translations of words and phrases from Latin into French, but also into Dutch. |
Note 3 | The approbatio is dated July 1577 - i.e., at a moment when Antwerp was going over to the party of the rebellion, in a spirit of more religious tolerance. Corderius's work is in the religious field neutral, but the author was a notorious Calvinist: in normal times Plantin would have avoided this kind of publication. We may consequently suppose that Plantin has been induced by pro-Calvinist elements to print this schoolbook, and that the hand of Zibertus Dunghen has also been somewhat forced. |
