Description after the copy in Museum Plantin-Moretus, A 106. According to BB there are two variants of this copper engraving (= for other variant cf. no. cp011443), whilst there are also copies showing a woodcut (as figuring in the 1587- and 1588- Latin editions) 2) 50 engravings, 105 × 70, numbered underneath to the right 1 to 50, and representing the Passion of the Christ; and 1 engraving, 110 × 75, representing within a small etched border of some 5 mm., the Christ pouring the blood from his wound in the breast into a chalice held by an angel, and surrounded by seven other angels helding the instruments of his tortures (in the Museum Plantin-Moretus-copy this engraving is facing the title-page). Each printed on the recto-side of a sheet. These sheets form a separate set of illustrations, not found in all copies of the edition. | Note 2 | The praefatio has the date of 17 January 1587 (as in the Latin and French editions), but it is dedicated to the Sodalitas of the Blessed Virgin in Antwerp (instead of to the Sodalitas of the Holy Sacrament in Douai, as in the Latin and French editions). The text itself is a literal translation of the Latin one. |
| Note 3 | The 50 illustrations do not form an integral part of the edition. They are only accompanying it and could be interspersed by the bookbinder wherever he thought best. Not all copies, moreover, were sold with illustrations. Mijnken Liefrinck, intaglio-printer, was paid 9 florins Carolus guilders for having printed on 21 September [1587] 'een passie van Verborcht': 51 'plaetkens' [plates], each in 59 copies, totalling 3,010 prints (Arch. 20 folio 288). As the set of illustrations was also going with the French edition (see no. cp010128), this means that only a very limited number of copies could have been accompanied by Van der Borcht's engravings. It is, however, possible that Mijnken Liefrinck or other intaglio-printers working for Plantin have printed additional sets. |
