Note 1 | Concordances of the Bible, according to subjects; one of the most elaborate and complete ever compiled. |
Note 2 | In the dedicatories to Pope Gregorius XIII and to Michael Malenus (Van Malen), Abbot of Ninove, the author gives some interesting autobiographical details. |
Note 3 | Bullocus must have finished the work in 1567: the dated approbatio is from 28 October 1567; the two privileges - granted to the author and not to a publisher - are dated 12 November 1567 and 5 March 1568. It may be surmised that the author had difficulties in finding a typographer willing to embark on the gigantic enterprise that constituted the printing of the Oeconomia. Finally, in 1569, he could reach an agreement with Plantin. In a letter of 7 September 1569 to the bookseller Gaspar de Portonariis (Corr., II, no. 182) Plantin tells: 'J'ay aussi commencé Concordantiae Bibliae in f⁰, bien augmentées et ordonnées en milleur ordre que n'avoit faict Rob. Estienne ny ceulx de Bâle'. The printing lasted nearly three years. On 4 February 1572 Plantin declared to the Abbot of Hasnon: 'Nous aurons aussi achevé dedans quelque six semaines les grandes et nouvelles concordances des Bibles, qui se vendront quelque sept florins, le tout en blanc' (Corr., II, no. 310; cf. also Plantin's letter to Michael Malenus, Abbot of Ninove, 28 April 1572 [Corr., II, no. 330]: 'Opus D. Bulloci, paucis ut R.P.V. litteris respondeam, ita in dies excrevit ut, cum ante mensem crediderim me absolvere potuisse, nunc videam nos vix ante mensem etiam nunc posse perficere'). According to the colophon, the printing was actually finished on 30 April 1572. |
Note 4 | In the agreement between Bullocus's heirs and Plantin, 13 January 1573 (see further) reference is made to a contract between author and printer, signed at Brussels in 1569, but no details are given. However, a series of calculations by Plantin give an idea of the financial implications of the deal. In the draft of a bill sent to Brussels to Bullocus on 21 July 1572 (Arch. 8, folio 9v), the number of sheets entering in each copy is fixed at 331 (actually 332). In all 827 reams and 10 'mains' of paper were used, meaning that 1,250 copies were printed. Each ream of paper costed 2 florins Carolus guilders 2½ stuivers; the printing of a ream of paper was valued at 2 florins Carolus guilders The total costs were, consequently, at 4 florins Carolus guilders 2½ stuivers per ream, for 827 reams 10 'mains', 3,372 florins Carolus guilders 3¾ stuivers Half of this sum was 1,686 florins Carolus guilders 1 7/8 stuivers Plantin noted furthermore some extra-expenses: 36 florins Carolus guilders 4 stuivers for the 'imperfections' (calculated at 1 'main' of paper per sheet, making in all 16 reams 11 'mains' of paper) and some 300 florins Carolus guilders for casting and collecting type, whilst he stated also that Bullocus owed him 57 florins Carolus guilders 5 stuivers for books supplied. From this calculation-note it is clear that 1,250 copies were printed and that Bullocus had agreed to pay half of the total costs, for which he would receive half of the number of copies printed. In a new calculation-note, made very likely immediately after the death of Bullocus (Arch. 9, folio 12v), the error made previously was rectified: as there were not 331 but 332 sheets, the total number of reams used for the 625 copies to which Bullocus was entitled, arose to 415 reams, and, consequently, the sum he had to pay to 1,711 florins Carolus guilders 17½ stuivers |
Note 5 | New calculations were made on the following pages of the notebook (Arch. 9, folios 13v-14r), probably in view of the final settlement with the heirs of Bullocus. The number of copies forming the part of the author were now down to 600, of which 50 were said to have been supplied to Bullocus. They were worth 1,771 florins Carolus guilders 14 stuivers (398½ reams of printed paper: 1,643 florins Carolus guilders 16 stuivers; for the 'imperfections', at 1 'main' per sheet, and totalling 8 reams 6 'mains': 17 florins Carolus guilders 15 stuivers; 'pour l'assemblage', at 1 stuivers per ream: 19 florins Carolus guilders 18 stuivers; for two sheets reprinted, making 5 reams: 20 florins Carolus guilders 12 stuivers; for books supplied to Bullocus: 69 florins Carolus guilders 12 stuivers). Bullocus had borrowed, to defray the expenses for publishing his work, 1,594 florins Carolus guilders from Michael Malenus, Abbot of Ninove. Plantin, who had been a pledge of the loan, took over the 'obligation' (IOU). He deducted the amount from the 1,771 florins Carolus guilders 14 stuivers owed him by Bullocus. But to the 177 florins Carolus guilders 14 stuivers still left, he added a few other expenses (including 120 florins Carolus guilders for interests of a loan), so that the sum amounted finally to 327 florins Carolus guilders 14 stuivers |
Note 6 | This meant that the 600 copies, forming the part of the author, amounted in all (taking also into consideration deliveries of books to Bullocus and other debts incurred by the scholar) to 1,921 florins Carolus guilders 14 stuivers Deducting the IOU of 1,594 florins Carolus guilders Bullocus's heirs still owed Plantin 327 florins Carolus guilders 14 stuivers On this basis the printer started negotiations with the heirs. In a letter of 18-22 December 1572 to Maximilian Morillon, the attendant of Cardinal Granvelle in the Netherlands, Plantin explains that these negotiations began immediately after the death of Bullocus, in the beginning of December. Morillon must have asked Plantin to be as fair as possible, and the typographer promised to be as equitable as he could (Corr., III, no. 446). He didn't eat his word: in the agreement signed on 13 January 1573 (Corr., III, no. 453) Plantin took over the 550 remaining copies, now valued at 1,818 florins Carolus guilders (the 50 copies sent before to the author were no more accounted for). As counterpart he accepted the 'obligation' of 1,594 florins Carolus guilders of the Abbot of Ninove, annulled a debt of 164 florins Carolus guilders owed by Bullocus, and paid, moreover, the heirs in cash 30 florins Carolus guilders |
Note 7 | The Abbot of Ninove had it made possible for Bullocus to interest Plantin in printing the Oeconomia by granting a loan of 1,594 florins Carolus guilders Taking over the IOU, Plantin had to pay it back: on 2 January 1573 he noted in his ledger that the 1,594 florins Carolus guilders debt had been slightly rounded off upwards to 1,600 florins Carolus guilders, that 1,000 florins Carolus guilders had to be paid for in books, the remaining 600 florins Carolus guilders in 3 installments every six months. Actually, the Abbot of Ninove didn't bother about the regular payments, and was content with the delivery of books ordered at irregular times: from 25 August 1573 till 22 July 1580 for a total value of 1,554 florins Carolus guilders After that year, for a large period, the Abbey didn't order other books, so that on 1 January 1590, when the ledger was closed, a credit note of 46 florins Carolus guilders on behalf of the Abbey had to be put down in the new ledger (Arch. 19, folio 24). |
Note 8 | Listed in M 296, folio 3r (Concordantiae maiores Bibliorum Bulloci in f⁰, a⁰ -, f[euilles] -, [price:] florins Carolus guilders 6 stuivers 10), and M 164, folio 6v. |
