| Note 2 | In the dedicatory to F. Gentilis, Daniel Rechnicz explains that Sambucus, two years before, during his third journey to Italy, stayed for a time in Genoa, enjoying the hospitality of Stephanus Saulius, Ordericus Medicus and others. The Hungarian humanist wrote there his annotations on and his paraphrasis of De arte poetica. Rechnicz got the manuscript from Sambucus in order to have it published (…annotavit quaedam in Horatii Poeticam, atque paraphrasi illustravit. quae ut divulgare impetravi…). He dedicated the volume to Franciscus Gentilis in memory of the friendship between Sambucus and Franciscus’s brother, Stephanus Gentilis. It may be deduced from the context that at that moment both Rechnicz and Franciscus Gentilis were living in the Southern Netherlands. |

| Note 4 | The cost-accounting note in Arch. 4, folio 61 verso, specifies: the wages for composing and printing are entered on 20 and 27 February 1564, and amount to 14 florins Carolus guilders 2 stuivers 700 copies were printed. As each copy contains 12 sheets, 19 reams of paper were used, which, at 1 florins Carolus guilders per ream, came to 19 florins Carolus guilders — for some reason reduced to 18 florins Carolus guilders, bringing the overall costs to 32 florins Carolus guilders 2 stuivers ‘qui est peu moins 1 stuivers pièce’. |
