Illustrations | 55 copper engravings of varying dimensions: 1) Engraving: title-page, 196 × 130, with cut-out centerpart for typographical text; underneath in a cartouche the name of the designer: 'Bernardus Passarus. Ro. Inv.' 2) 42 engravings, 122 × 95 3) 9 engravings, 102 × 135 (the illustration on page 160 has been reprinted on page 191) 4) 1 engraving, 130 × 100 (on page 141)) 5) 1 engraving, 100 × 85 (on page 158) 6) 1 engraving, 112 × 86, with the monograms of the designer (Pieter Van der Borcht) and the engraver (Joannes Wiericx) (on page 88). As pointed out in letters from Plantin (see below) the plates were made in Italy (by an unknown engraver), probably after the designs of the Roman painter Bernardo Passaro (whose name, anyway, figures on the title-page), and shipped to Antwerp; with the only exception of the plate on page 88, which belonged to Plantin's stock and was used in those years in liturgical editions of the Officina Plantiniana |

Note 1 | Collection of religious poems by Gambara in the same style as his Precationes ad Deum of 1572 (of which some have been reproduced; e.g. In Innocentes, 46-48; In Ieiunium Christi, 49-50, In Christum in cruce pendentem, 58-60; In direptionem urbis Nicosiae, 149-151; Ad Aurelium Portulacam Brixianum, in patriam euntem, 180; other poems of the 1572-edition have been substantially rewritten), followed by some similar poems by other authors (De Laurentio Gambara carmen Iosippi Vasselii Lucensis, 181-182; In D. Antonium Patavinum Achillis Statii Lusitani hymnus, 183-190; Turcis navali proelio victis Achillis Statii Lusitani eucharisticon, 191-194). |
Note 2 | Each poem, with but a few exceptions, starts with a short 'argumentum' (summary), and has an illustration, adapted to the text. As in the 1572-series, each poem on a saint or a religious feast is dedicated to a prelate; some are directly addressed to personalities, generally prominent members of the clergy. Note 3 | Plantin speaks about the publication in some letters to Arias Montanus. In his epistle of 1-4 September 1576 he tells in passing 'Nuper accepi Carmina Gambarae sed nondum figuras [= the plates] quas intelligo datas Dno. Casnedo [= Italian merchant in Rome] neque quicquam aliud ipsi traditum vidi neque quando sim accepturus scio' (Corr., V, no. 738, page 198), and on 3 May 1577 he mentions the shipment of a copy (Corr., V, no. 757, page 236: 'Mitto nunc Catalogum nundinarum et D. Gambarae carmina pia cum figuris aeneis quas acceperam ab Urbe'). Finally, in an Italian letter of 19 November 1577 to a not named correspondent, supposed to be the Italian merchant Casnedo, the shipment of 50 copies 'Poemata Gambare con le figure di Rome' is announced. Some 12 copies had to be presented to the author and a copy to each of the Cardinals Madrutius, Granvelle, and Sirlet, and eventually to other personalities. The remaining copies could be sold (Corr., V, no. 782). |
