Note 1 | Chronicle of the Popes and the Roman Empire (later the Holy Roman Empire of the German nation) from the beginning of the papacy until 1276 (pages 17-419), with an addition until 1334 (pages 420-452); edited by Suffridus Petri. |
Note 2 | Second edition, the first having been edited by Joannes Herold, and published in Basel, by Joannes Oporinus, 1559, in folio, together with the chronicle of Marianus Scotus (cf. Brunet, III, Column 1503). Petri followed some manuscripts unknown to Herold, but they must have lacked the additional part as given in the Basel-publication. In his own edition, this additional part is, consequently, introduced by 'Quae hinc porro sequuntur, Appendicis loco Basileensis editio adiecerat, nos ut Martiniana subiungemus'. |
Note 3 | In the dedicatory to A. Heyns, the editor explains how, having acquired an old manuscript of the chronicle, he started working on it. This was not an easy task as the manuscript was corrupt in many places. He was, however, aided by Jacobus Scipmannus, the rector of the Jesuit College at Louvain, who procured him two other manuscripts, one of the Abbey of Tongerlo, the other of the St. Martin College at Louvain. In the note to the reader on page [453], Suffridus Petri tells furthermore how, having already forwarded his text to Plantin for being printed, he could, through the intermediary of Petrus Smenga Schotanus, professor of Hebrew at Louvain, examine two other manuscripts from which he inserts (on pages [453-454]) the most important variants. |
Note 4 | According to the colophon the printing was finished on 1 June 1574. |
Note 5 | Listed in M 296, folio 11v (Martini Poloni chronicon, 8⁰, 1574, f[euilles] 30½, [price:] stuivers 7). |
