Online bibliographical references | |
Note 1 | Treatise in 8 'books' on the history of the Christian Church from a Catholic point of view, centering on its organization, with detailed references to the heretics, and, as far as England is concerned, the first attempt to compile a descriptive list of the Catholics - clergy and laity - who suffered death, exile or imprisonment for recusancy. As such the publication provoked the bitterest hostility in England. |
Note 2 | The two dedicatories give very valuable information on Sanderus's career up to that time. |
Note 3 | The only known copies have the address of Michel Sonnius, the Parisian bookseller, with whom Plantin was in close relations in those years. RDB, referring to the Biographie Universelle, gives as address 'Antverpiae, ex off. Chr. Plantini. 1581', but the Biographie Universelle, sub Sanders, 40, page 316, says only 'Anvers, 1581'. Moreover, owing to the political situation in Antwerp, where in those years the Calvinists were in power, it is doubtful that Plantin should have issued an edition bearing his name. |
Note 4 | He printed, however, most certainly the work, stating this explicitly in some of his letters: to de Çayas, September-October 1579, listing, among the works he is printing, 'libro Sanderi de Monarchia visibili' (Corr., VI, no. 840, page 89), to Buyssetius, 10 December 1579, where likewise, among the works issued by his press in the last two years, is noted 'Sanderus de Monarchia visibili' (Ibidem, no. 851, page 114). This seems to indicate that the printing was actually finished in 1579. |
Note 5 | Reprint of a former edition: either the first (Louvain, Reynerus Velpius, 1571) or most likely (cf. immediately below) the second (Antwerp, Joannes Foulerus [Fowler], 1578: a copy in Museum Plantin-Moretus, A 2900). |
Note 6 | Listed in M 296, folio 11v (Monarchia Sanderi f⁰ Foulerii [= meaning very probably 'according to the edition of Foulerus': see immediately above], f⁰, [feuilles] 208, [price:] florins Carolus guilders 3). |
