| Note 3 | In the title-page it is stated that the translation was done from Latin into Dutch. No editions of Fisher's Latin prayers are known before the publication of his collected works, Würzburg, Fleischmann, 1597, which contains at the end 'Psalmi vel precationes' (cf. Dictionary of National Biography, 19, page 63). Van Hemert, who in the 'prologus' gives some biographical details on 'Joannes Pfischerus, bisschop van Roffa', does not specify how he got the Latin texts. |
| Note 4 | The privilege is dated 26 September 1551; that is before Plantin started printing. The name of the printer to whom the privilege was granted is not given. This can imply that in fact Plantin reprinted an edition of c. 1551, reproducing at the same time the text of the privilege which served for that publication but with the omission of the printer's name (in 1579-1585, with the decomposition of the royal central administration, such practices were not uncommon; cf. L. Voet, The Golden Compasses, II, page 255 ff.). However, no such older edition is as yet known. |
