Note 1 A 'summa' of theology, more especially regarding the sins and cases of conscience, in the form of a dictionary with the entries in alphabetical order, in two volumes (I.: letters A-H; II.: letters I-Z).
Note 2 Reprint of earlier editions (the editio princeps was issued in Bologna, 1515, in 2 vols. in 4⁰, and often reprinted), but with some changes. According to the note of the typographer to the reader in vol. I, page [2], the text was corrected and amended by the publisher, i.e. Plantin ('…Nam praeter innumeros locos mutilatos & confusos, qui a nobis summa diligentia restituti sunt. Argumenta quoque singulis titulis praefixa, tibi summopere profutura exhibemus'). Who did the editing is not specified.
Note 3 The publication was somewhat forced upon Plantin by Cardinal Granvelle, residing then in Italy. Cf. the letter of Plantin to Granvelle, 22 October 1568 (Correspondance de C. Plantin, II, no. 155: '…je commence l'impression de Summa Silvestrina'; somewhat further in the letter Plantin explains that, having started printing the new breviary, he had been warned that his text contained faults and omissions, so that he stopped the production ''et [his employees] recommenceront à poursuivre la Summa Sylvestrina entrelaissée, laquelle nous espérons avoir achevé dedans quelque 2 mois'); Granvelle to Plantin, 19 November 1568 (Supplément Correspondance de C. Plantin, no. 78: 'La Sylvestrine sera oeuvre prouffictable, et me ferez plaisir de m'en imprimer trois exemplaires en bon papier de Francfort, pour mes librairies'); Plantin to Granvelle, 10 December 1568 (Correspondance de C. Plantin, II, no. 159: 'J'auray, dieu aidant, achevé Summa Sylvestrina ceste semaine prochaine'); Plantin to Granvelle, 31 December 1568 (Ibidem,no. 163: 'J'ay achevé la Sylvestrine et empacqué une…'); Granvelle to Plantin, 5 February 1569 (Supplément Correspondance’ de C. Plantin, no. 81: 'J'attendray…celluy [the copy shipped by Plantin] de la Sylvestrine…'); Granvelle to Plantin, 17 March 1569 (Ibidem, no. 84: the Cardinal thought that the copy of the 'Sylvestrine' would soon arrive).
Note 4 The edition was reprinted by the firm Bellerus, Antwerp, in 1578 or 1581.
Note 5 The illustrations were cut by Antoon van Leest, who was paid, on 11 December 1568, 30 stuivers for '3 figures de S. Silvester' and 2 florins Carolus guilders for 'Item l'arbre de consanguinitté dud[ict] Summa Silvestrina' (Arch. 31, folio 65 recto).
Note 6 Listed in M 296, folio 17 verso (Summa Sylvestrina, A⁰ -, f[euilles] --, [price:] stuivers 35).
