Note 1 | Reprint of the Nouveau Testament, translated by R. Benoist, and published by Plantin in 1567. Some changes in the accompanying parts: 'L'imprimeur au lecteur catholique', the Note on the genealogy of Jesus Christ, and the 'Table des Evangiles et Epistres…' of 1567 have disappeared; 'L'Estat des Juifs', 'Monarchie des Romains', 'Table des tesmoignages…', 'Table ou recueil par lieux communs' have been added. Plantin, however, took the precaution to drop the controversial name of R. Benoist from the title-page and to put instead 'Traduict de Latin en François par les theologiens de Louvain'. |
Note 2 | The date of publication poses a problem: the title-page has 1573, the privileges are dated July and September 1572, but the colophon says 'Imprimé à Anvers…l'an M.D.LXX'. This could imply that the text had already been printed in 1570 but the book only published in 1573. In fact, it may be taken for granted that the year 1570 in the colophon is an error: the Livre des Ouvriers shows clearly that the Testament en francois was composed (and printed) in 1573 (Arch. 32, folio 70v: the compositor Isebrant van Kelft started with sheets AB on 31 January 1573 and finished GG on 20 June of that year; other compositors must also have worked on the job, as Van Kelft did not make all the quires). |
Note 3 | Listed in M 296, folio 13r ([Nouveau Testament françois] Idem sans annotations a⁰ 73, f[euilles] 28, [price:] stuivers 8). |
