| Note 1 | Edition by Andreas Schottus (at that moment residing in Spain) of the geographical treatise of Pomponius Mela (1st part, pages 7-64), followed by a series of notes and annotations: a) Castigationes Hermolai Barbari in Pomponium Melam. Ad Alexandrum Sextum, pontificem maximum (2nd part, pages 1-18, with 'praefatio' on page 1; reprint from the edition of Pomponius Mela by Hermolaeus Barbarus, Venice, Albertus de Lisona, 1502 [cf. Brunet, IV, Column 800]); b) Fredenandi Noni Pintiani in Pomp. Melam castigationes (2nd part, pages 19-80 [= for 84]; with the dedicatory 'Reverendissimo…domino Ioanni Quinoni, Salmanticensis Academiae praefecto, Fredenandus Pintianus, rhetoricae, et utriusque linguae in eadem Academia professor, perpetuam felicitatem', dated Salamanca, 1543, on pages 19-20, followed on page 20 by 'Typographus lectori', dated Antwerp, explaining a technical detail [= the use of asterisks]; as can be deduced from Schottus's biography of F. Nonus, this treatise by Nonus, together with the two hereafter mentioned, had remained in manuscript and had been transferred with his library into the possession of the Academy of Salamanca, where they were consulted by Schottus); c) Praetermissa in Melam [Fredenandi Noni] (3rd part, pages 1-7); d) Fred. | Note 2 | In the dedicatory to Cardinal Quiroga are some interesting autobiographical details regarding Schottus's stay in Spain. The letter to Plantin, 5 May 1581, gives an interesting survey of humanism and humanists in the Netherlands (reproduced in Corr, VI, no. 929). In the letter to Ortelius, Schottus affirmed to have made his 'observations' on Pomponius in Paris, using an old manuscript ('Promiseram, memini, doctissime Orteli, nostras olim observationes, iam tum paene affectas in Pomponium Melam, compositum a me Lutetiae ad Divi Victoris cum vetustiss. exemplari calamo exarato, et, unde hausit, auctoribus Graecis, praesertim Herodoto'). In the dedicatory in the Herodotos to his brother, Jacobus, details are given about the Schottus-family. |
| Note 3 | The map showing the world as visualized by Pomponius was executed by Ortelius at the request of Schottus (in a letter, dated Toledo, 11 February 1582: Hessels, Epistulae, page 270; cf. J. Denucé, Oud-Nederlandsche kaartmakers in betrekking met Plantijn, II, 1913, page 81). |
| Note 4 | In his letter of 1-13 November 1581 to Schottus Plantin acknowledged having received the manuscript. He promises to put it on his presses as soon as possible, but warned that he was not yet in the possession of the 'additamentum' and the dedicatory to Cardinal Quiroga. He also promised to have the manuscript approved by the Catholic authorities - not an easy matter at that moment, as the Calvinists controlled the city. Plantin in his letter was rather light-hearted about the possibility to get an approbatio, but it does not seem that he received one, as none is reproduced in the edition (Corr., VII, no. 960: 'Melam accepi cum tuis Annotationibus sumque prima occasione praelo submissurus favente Domino Deo. Idque ad tuum omnino praescriptum faciam; nihil siquidum praeterea requiri video ad ipsius libri ornatum. Vereor tamen ne tam cito facere possim atque vellem…Habeo quae necessario sunt perficienda. Ad hoc etiam accessit quod fasciculum litterarum cum Aditamento ad Melam et Epistola dedicatoria ad Illustriss. Card. Quirogam nondum viderim…A Pastore nostro curabo librum uti jubes approbari. Is autem cum paucis aliis catholicis theologis adhuc fertur et cum illis versamur semper non sine mala gratia plurimorum qui cuperent sua per me imprimi id quod numquam impetrabunt. Magistratui vero nec ordinibus nihil mihi denegandum est quod ipsi jussi et sumptibus suis imprimi decreverint in typographia nostra'). |
