| Note 3 | In the foreword Ayala explains that a long time ago, when in Germany in the service of Emperor Charles V, he had compiled this treatise; some friends, to whom he had given the manuscript, had it printed without his authorization; as there were many errors left, he had the text revised. Very probably this foreword is reproducing literally the one of the 1569 Valencia-edition. |
| Note 4 | It may be surmised that Benedictus Arias Montanus, who signed the approbatio and was a personal friend of Ayala (cf. the introduction by Arias to the 1575 Leinatius-edition of the Homiliae of St. Ambrosius: see no. 56A), induced Plantin to reprint this manual. |
