Note 1 Reprint of the real '1558'-edition.
Note 2 H.D.L. Vervliet proved that La théologie germanicque printed by Plantin and showing the date of 1558 on the title-page has in fact been issued in 1579-1580 (see no. cp012971). He did not know this Latin edition, but his arguments are as valid for it as for the French publication: the printer's mark and the type used point to a much later date than 1558. Moreover, the work is listed at the date of 1578 in M 296, folio 18v ([Theologia germanica] Eadem 1578, f[euilles] -, [price:] stuivers 1½).
Note 3 It is probably this Latin (and not the French) edition which is mentioned in the curious letter Plantin wrote to (an otherwise unknown) Laurentius, 14 June 1580 (Corr., VI, no. 879). This Laurentius must have asked the typographer some pertinent questions about the Theologia Germanica. Plantin answers very carefully - so carefully that it does not become clear if he is speaking of an edition published years ago or of a publication which left his presses quite recently. Anyway, he tries to persuade his correspondent as convincingly as possible that the publication was acceptable to both Catholics and Calvinists, and that years ago he had been granted in due form the privilege to print it ('Libellum cui titulus est Theologia Germanica per theologos deputatos a Regia catholica Majestate prius approbatum et postea Privilegio Regio mihi datum impressi neque umquam intellexi quemquam theologum catholicum fuisse qui eum librum reprobaret. Nihil praeterea nunc venit in mentem quo vos scrupulo vobis injecto levare queam').
