Note 1 | First edition of Tacitus's Opera by J. Lipsius. |
Note 2 | Contains: Historiae (pages 15-214), Annales (pages 215-559), Germania (pages 562-582), Agricola (pages 583-608), Dialogus [already attributed to Quinctilianus] (pages 609-642). |
Note 3 | The critical notes are preceded by an Ad lectorem monitio in which Lipsius gives details about the documents he used for editing Tacitus's text. They were primarily: two 15th century manuscripts of the Vatican Library (now Vaticani libri nos. 1863 and 1864) and a 15th century manuscript of the Farnesian Library (now Naples, Ms. IV c 21), which Lipsius consulted during his stay in Rome (1568-1570), two printed editions of the Annales (one edited by Beatus Rhenanus: 2nd edition, Basel, Froben, 1544; the other edited by Aemylius Ferrettus, after the Basel-publication edited by Beatus Rhenanus in 1533: Lyons, S. Gryphius, 1542), and an unidentified Tacitus-edition printed in Venice, 1494. Cf. Ruysschaert, Juste Lipse et les Annales de Tacite, pages 17 ff. |
Note 4 | After the publication of the edition, both Marcus Antonius Muretus (whom Lipsius met in Rome) and Claude Chifflet (whom Lipsius saw in Dôle in July-August 1571) claimed that Lipsius had 'pillaged' their notes for the establishment of Tacitus's text and for his Notae. J. Ruysschaert (in 'Le séjour de Juste Lipse à Rome', and in Juste Lipse et les Annales de Tacite) makes it clear that these accusations were without foundation. Cf. also on the problem C.O. Brink, 'Justus Lipsius and the text of Tacitus' in The Journal of Roman Studies, 41, 1951, pages 32-51. |
Note 5 | Lipsius sent the manuscript to Plantin immediately after his arrival in Cologne, following his departure from the university of Iena (Corr., IV, no. 517: letter of Lipsius to Plantin, 4 March 1574: 'Tacitum meis scholiis illustratum vix tandem mitto ad te'). In the fall of the previous year Plantin had several times insisted on receiving this manuscript (cf. his letter to Lipsius of 10-28 December 1573: Corr., IV, no. 502). See also J. Ruysschaert, Juste Lipse et les Annales de Tacite, page 7. |
Note 6 | According to the colophon the printing was finished on 30 September 1574. |
Note 7 | Listed in M 296, folio 3r (Cornelius Tacitus Justi Lipsii, in 8⁰, a⁰ 74, f[euilles] 48, [price:] stuivers 12), and Ms. 164, folio 6v. |
