Note 2 | On 7 September 1587 Plantin acknowledges having received from the author 'Exemplar Orationis tuae [= the manuscript text] et arma huic adprimenda' (Corr., VIII-IX, no. 1301). The 'arma' was either the drawing of the coat-of-arms of Bishop Six or the copperplate itself. |
Note 3 | On 21 September 1587 was paid to Mijnken Liefrinck 5 florins Carolus guilders 2½ stuivers for printing 1,036 copies 'pour le tiltre, in obitu [orationis funebris] Jo. Six' (Arch. 20, folio 288). |
Note 4 | The publication was in fact commissioned by the author: 'Franciscus Lucas, canonicus Sti. Audomari doibt ad prima octobris 1587 la somme de [55] florins que montent les mille exemplaires de l'oraison funebre imprimée pour luy suivant le compte que mon père [= Jan Moretus is writing the note] en a faict tant de papier que de l'impression et impression de la figure en cuivre, etc'. Is noted also: 'payé pour le port aux messagiers qui ont porté les pasquets divers' 2 florins Carolus guilders 4 stuivers, and 'Envoyés en diverses fois à divers' but the sum not entered. On the credit side of the account is entered, but without value given: 'Item pour 64 exemplaires de l'oraison funebre restées en nos mains lesquelles avons distribuées au magistrat etc. desquels ne veult rien estre comptés pour les avoir distribués' (Arch. 20, folio 290). |
