| Note 2 | The work was printed in the Officina Plantiniana apud Franciscum Raphelengium in Leiden. Part of the edition has the Leiden imprint (BB, III, pages 1061-1062), but a number of copies received a title-page with Plantin's Antwerp imprint. |
| Note 3 | The printing was finished before May 1586 (letter of Plantin to Arias Montanus, 3 May 1586: Corr., VII, no. 1096: 'Is [= Lipsius] nuper emisit Dialogum de vera pronunciatione linguae Latinae'). It lasted, however, some time before Plantin in Antwerp received copies from Leiden. In his letter to N. Oudartius of 8 October 1586, Plantin told the Malines canon that six copies of the publication has come through by way of Paris; to judge from the context this must have been the first shipment to reach Antwerp (Corr., VIII-IX, no. 1152). |
| Note 4 | It is not very likely that Plantin has sold many copies of this 'Antwerp'-edition in the Southern Netherlands: the dedicatory to Sir Philip Sidney, the active agent of Queen Elizabeth in Holland, was not less than high-treason in the eyes of the Spanish officials. In the already quoted letter of 8 October 1586 to N. Oudartius, Plantin told his correspondent that in one copy - of the two he was sending - he cut away part of the title-page and the dedicatory. The other copy was left intact, but the printer urged his correspondent not to reveal the content of the incriminated parts. He added that the name [of the man to whom the work is dedicated] has been printed against his will and that he has begged the author not to tolerate such things in the future. One of the four copies in Museum Plantin-Moretus (R 15.3) has the handwritten approbatio of a Malines censor librorum - but in this copy precisely the title-page and the dedicatory are missing. |
