Note 1Text of twenty plays by Plautus, edited by Joannes Sambucus (pages 9-762); followed by annotations and 'lectiones' by other scholars: Joachimus Camerarius (Annotationes quae quidem ad lectionum veritatem constituendam faciunf. 763-806), Carolus Langius (Antiquae lectiones ex Plauti tribus exemplarib[us] manuscrip[tae]: 807-839), Adrianus Turnebus (Ex Adriani Turnebi libris adversariorum in Plautum observationes: 840-843), Hadrianus Junius (Observationes: 844-847).
Note 2As can be deduced from the title-page, Sambucus must in fact have followed an already formerly published text-edition, edited by Ioachim Camerarius, into which he incorporated his own corrections and additions.
Note 3In the foreword to Plantin, dated 23 August 1565, Sambucus tells that, having compared some very old manuscripts, especially the one in his own library which had been used by Jovianus Pontanus, he had been able to add some 300 verses ('Mitto, quemadmodum non tu solum, sed multi alii a me petierunt, observationes quasdam et varias in Plautum de chirographis vetustissimis et praecipue meo illo quo Jovianus Pontanus est usus, collectas scripturas, adeoque etiam ultra omnes aliorum editiones, ad trecentos paene versus desideratos, quos meo, et publico meliori fato reperi'; on the title-page the number has been reduced to 'somewhat more than 200 verses': 'Nunc vero plus quam cc versibus, qui passim desiderabantur, ex VV. CC. additis'), and furthermore explains the meaning of the marginals and of the asterisks used. He continues with a long eulogy of his father, who recently had passed away.
Note 4In his foreword Plantin begins with thanking Sambucus for having forwarded his manuscript (…Sambucus…Plauti postremam editionem ex vetustorum codicum fide quos ille magno precio comparaverat, maxima diligentia et labore recognitam, benigne nobis transmisit'), and continues with giving some information on the commentaries: how Carolus Langius and Hadrianus Junius forwarded their notes, and how had been added from the late A. Turnebus's Adversaria some passages on Plautus's comedies ('…deinde D. Carolus Langius vir eximia pietate et eruditione praestans, liberaliter etiam sui Plauti, cuius priores Comoedias cum tribus manuscriptis codicibus contulerat, nobis copiam fecit, ut quicquid ex eo ad hunc expoliendum et Sambuci lectiones suorum librorum fide et auctoritate confirmandas depromi posset, margini adscriberemus. The schoolmaster Antoine Tiron received, on 6 March 1566, 4 florins Carolus guilders 10 stuivers for having copied (for the use of Plantin's compositors) some 'ob[servationes]', but the text is somewhat corrupt ('pour l'escritture des ob. de Turnebus [written over 'Lang', which has been crossed] murre (?) Scaliger in Plautum) (Arch. 31, folio 83v). Quentin Stenhartsius also made some transcriptions, as is stated in Arch. 4 (see below).
Note 5Plantin in his foreword says nothing about Camerarius's Annotationes. It may be supposed that they were copied or adapted from Camerarius's edition. This seems to have been done by Victor Giselinus, who received, at an unspecified time in 1566, 6 florins Carolus guilders 18 stuivers 'Pro Plauti annotat[iones] Camerarii annotate ad editionem Pro sententiis poetarum' (Arch. 31, folio 72r).
Note 6Plantin supervised rather closely the publication. In a letter of 12 January 1566 to the Hungarian humanist he remarks: 'Jay trouve aussi de cas fortuit quelques vers in Plauto qui navoyent change que de place dun feillet ou deux parquoy ie les ay laissés, ayant annote simplement en chaicun lieu que vostre exemplaire les avoit en un autre endroict' (Suppl. Corr., no. 13).
Note 7The cost-accounting note in Arch. 4, folio 99, gives the following details about 'Plautus 16⁰': composing and printing started on 8 November 1565 and lasted until 9 March 1566; the wages amounted to 98 florins Carolus guilders 17 stuivers, including 7 florins Carolus guilders 12 stuivers 'Pour les escrittures des diverses lecons (?) à m. Quent[in Stenhartsius] et Ant[oine Tiron]' (the contribution of V. Giselinus is not mentioned). As each copy contains 26½ sheets and as 2,125 copies were printed, 115 reams of paper (including 4 reams 'pour les imperfections') were used, which, at 1 florins Carolus guilders 11 stuivers per ream, came to 178 florins Carolus guilders 8 stuivers, bringing the overall costs to 277 florins Carolus guilders 'qui est la pièce 2¾ [stuivers]'.
Note 8500 'Plautus 16⁰ Plantin 1566, f[euilles] 26½ [per copy]' were sold to the firm Stelsius on 23 Ȧpril 1566 for 92 florins Carolus guilders 15 stuivers (counted: 26½ reams at 3 florins Carolus guilders 10 stuivers per ream) (Arch. 44, folio 47r).
Note 9Listed in M 296, folio 14v (Plautus cum Annotat[ionibus] in 16⁰, f[euilles] 26½, [price:] stuivers 6½).
