| Note 1 | The 'Carmen pro vera medicina' announced on the title-page is in fact the dedicatory epistle to Cardinal Granvelle and more an eulogy of the Cardinal than a 'poem for real medicine' (pages [3-10]). The treatise on the plague (pages [13-42]), also in the form of a Latin poem, is far more interesting. |
| Note 2 | In the note to the reader (page [12]) it is explained that the publisher, Silvius, had wished to give short notes explaining the more obscure passages for the non-initiated in the medical art. The author, arguing that he had written for scholars, refused to make the notes himself but agreed that they should be compiled by another medical expert. These notes are given as very short marginals. Likewise at the initiative of the publisher, and probably by the same medical expert, were written the 'scholia' on pages [43-54]. |
| Note 3 | The work was published by G. Silvius and printed by Plantin. The colophon specifies that it was finished on 6 October 1562. This date is impossible as Plantin was at that time in Paris, having fled from the Inquisition; all his belongings - including his presses and typographical material - had been sold on 28 April 1562. It has to be read 6 October 1561. This is more in agreement with the date of the privilege, 5 September 1561. Moreover, some 12 copies of 'Carmen Ayale pro vera medicina 4⁰' were already packed in a chest to be sent to Parisian booksellers on 7 October 1561 (Arch. 36, folios 13 verso-14 recto).
