Note 1 Four variants are known of the edition: a) this one, with a title-page showing the coat-of-arms of Philip II; b) one in which the somewhat compromising coat-of-arms was changed into a more neutral Holy Family in grotto (see cp011188); c) one especially ornated and with some additional parts, printed for the Duke of Alva (see cp011697); d) one with the border-engravings as used in c, but with the coat-of-arms of Philip II on the title-page and without the additional parts printed for Alva (cp010351).
Note 2 The printing of the copper engravings was very likely done by Mijnken Liefrinck, but the annotation in Plantin's ledger is rather confused and very likely only refers to the special Alva-edition (see cp011697).
Note 3 Probably referred to in M 296, folio 8 verso ([Horae Rom. in 8º] Idem 12º magno [= very likely an error for '8º magno'] cum figuris aeneis sans vignettes [= meaning border-engravings], [price:] stuivers 25).
Note 4 Bowen mentions that a copy of the variant with the coat of arms of Philip II on the title page without any borders is present at Koninklijke Bibliotheek The Hague.  (Bowen, Books of Hours, 228)
Note 5 Bowen suggests a-g8, A-Y8 as a possible collation. (Bowen, Books of Hours, 228)
Note 6 According to Bowen, a variant of this Horae exists, which is similarly without borders, but with a distinct title page design that may have originally contained the coat of arms of Cardinal Granvelle. Bowen mentions that this variant was not known to Voet and a copy was seen at Rijksmuseum Meermanno-Weststreenianum in The Hague. (Bowen, Books of Hours, 228)
Note 7 According to Bowen, the copy at Museum Plantin-Moretus is missing quires “C” and “F”. (Bowen, Books of Hours, 228)
Note 8 According to Bowen, the copy London copy lacks the last leaf with the illustration of the Resurrection. (Bowen, Books of Hours, 228)
Note 9 Bowen mentions that all variants of this edition were set and printed as a single edition between 13 May and 8 July 1570. She refers to Arch. 31, folio 131 recto for payments for the setting of this Horae and to Arch. 31, folio 148 verso for payments for the printing. Furthermore Bowen adds, payments made to Mynken Liefrinck between October 1570 and March 1571 for the printing of the engravings used to to illustrate this edition are recorded in Arch. 16, opening 136 right. (Bowen, Books of Hours, 229)
