| Note 1 | The original Italian version of Orlando furioso was published in 1516 and met with tremendous success. A French translation, attributed to Jean des Gouttes, appeared at Lyons, 1543-1544, and was reprinted in Paris in 1545, 1552 and 1555. Another French translation, by Jean Fornir or Fornier (cf. on this French poet: Dictionnaire des lettres françaises publié sous la direction de Mgr. Grente. Le seizième siècle, 1951, page 329), was published in Paris, by Michel Vascosan, 1555: the Plantinian edition is a reprint of this Vascosan publication. Cf. Brunet, I, Columns 440-442, on these French translations. |

| Note 3 | 'Le premier volume de Roland furieux, traduit d'italien en françois' is the third of the three works listed in the first privilege granted to Plantin, 5 April 1555, and is, consequently, considered to be his third edition, even if actually the work may have preceded the first two or may have followed others published by Plantin in 1555. |
| Note 4 | Brunet, I, Column 442, mentions an in 8⁰ Antwerp edition of 1555 with the address of the Antwerp publisher and bookseller, Gerard Spelman (Speelman). In an handwritten annotation in the Ruelens-de Backer-copy in Museum Plantin-Moretus, Rooses notes 'Même ouvrage [i.e. Premier volume de Roland furieux] avec l'adresse: En Anvers ‖ chez Gerard Spelman à la pom̄e dor. ‖ Avec privilège impérial ‖ MDLV ‖ Sur le frontisp. la marque de Spelman. Sur le revers de la dernière feuille la même marque (Biblioth. de M. Spaes à Anvers)'. We were not able to locate a copy but it may be surmised that the Spelman-edition is identical to the Plantinian one, with only the title-page and the Vignette on the last page changed. |
| Note 5 | Rooses, M. Musée Plantin-Moretus, page 18, doubts that this edition has actually been printed by Plantin: the type and initials are not found in the other Plantinian publications of 1555 and following years; the typographical execution is inferior to those of the other works published in 1555; the principal argument, however, is the fact that the address on the title-page is not given as 'De l'imprimerie de Christofle Plantin' but as 'Chez Christofle Plantin' (meaning that the edition was in fact printed by another typographer and only sold by Plantin). Rooses couldn't specify who had been the actual printer, but didn't think that G. Spelman had done the job, as no other work with the imprint of the latter bears any resemblance to the Roland furieux, and as it is even doubtful that Spelman at that time had a printing office at all. The arguments of Rooses are not conclusive: the typographical execution is not as bad as he implies; some typographical elements can be found in other Plantinian editions of these years; and if Plantin indeed generally used the forms 'De l'imprimerie…' and 'Chez…' in the sense as indicated by Rooses, occasionally, in these first years, he put also 'Chez…' on the title-page of works printed in his office. The problem merits a more profound investigation, especially regarding the type and initials used. |
