Note 1 | Latin grammar in three volumes (I. Rudimenta; II. Syntaxis; III. Prosodia); each presented as a separate publication but normally sold together, and having on the title-page of the first volume the enumeration of the three parts. |
Note 2 | The three volumes have each a dedicatory: I. Rudimenta: Antwerp, 24 July 1581; II. Syntaxis: Calais, 1 January 1582; III. Prosodia: Rouen, 14 May 1582. Two of them (II. Syntaxis and III. Prosodia) have both an approbatio, dated Calais, 20 March 1582, and signed by an emigrated Antwerp canon. This could mean that Plantin printed the first volume at the end of 1581, and had to wait publishing the two other parts until the text was mailed by the author from Rouen after 14 May 1582. It is also possible that the three volumes were forwarded by the author from Rouen, and were printed together. Another possibility is the most probable of all: that Schenkelius, before leaving Antwerp in the second half of 1581, arranged the modalities for printing his treatises with Plantin, giving the typographer already the manuscript of the first volume; that the second and third volume were mailed from Rouen in the second half of May or in June 1582, and that Plantin waited to publish the first volume until all three volumes were in his possession. |
