Note 1 | Portraits in full-length of the counts of Holland and Zeeland, from Thierry of Aquitania (9th century) to Philip II, shown on the uneven pages, with on the facing page (on the even sides) a 10 lines Latin poem on each count by Michael Vosmerus. The contribution of Vosmerus is thus rather limited, the principal interest of the publication being centred on the illustrations. |
Note 2 | It may be supposed that the copper engravings were realized in the studio of Philip Galle, who printed them and acted as the publisher of the album. Plantin in fact did only the letterpress printing. |
Note 3 | About the iconographic sources of the portraits, at least for the series from Thierry of Aquitania until Jacoba of Bavaria (nos. 1-29), interesting details are given on the title-page and in the last poem (pages 84-87; further explained and summarized in a marginal note on page 86). The portraits on wooden panels, painted by successive Haarlem artists, had adorned the walls of the church of the Carmelite Convent at Haarlem. During the siege of the city [by the Spanish army, in 1573-74] they were removed, not without damage. To preserve the likenesses for the coming generations the Haarlem artist Guilielmus Thybaut did copy them. His drawings served as models for the engravers of the Galle studio. The text on the title-page implies that G. Thybaut also did the portraits of the remaining counts (nos. 30-36) not represented in the Carmelite Convent of Haarlem. |
Note 4 | Besides in the following editions of Vosmerus (see nos. 2476-2477), the illustrations have also been reproduced in H. Barlandus, Hollandiae comitum historia et icones, 1584 (see no. cp011470). |
Note 5 | Two copies were mailed to Camerarius (?), mid-September 1578 (Corr., VI, no. 807). |
Note 6 | Not listed in the Plantinian catalogues (M 296 and M 164). This underlines the fact that Philip Galle was the sole publisher. |
