| Note 2 | The editor followed the text as reproduced in the Seneca cum animadversionibus of Delrio, 1576, itself based on the edition of Seneca by G. Fabricius, 1566 (see cp013142), but he collated it with a manuscript and four printed editions. The copy of Delrio's 1576-publication in Museum Plantin-Moretus (R 54.17) has been arranged to this effect, and the adapted and amended title-page and text have been followed by the compositors of the 1588-edition.Has been added in the 1588-edition: an 'argumentum' (summary) before each play. To the contrary, many manuscript notes in the 1576 copy don't have been reproduced: marginal annotations with variants and the references to these variants; a 'Notarum explicatio' before the text-part, giving the sources of the editor and their sigla used in the marginal notes (Ms. alter Manudescriptorum; Mss. Manuscriptus uterque; Or. cod. Idem quod alter manuscriptorum sed hac nota utimur in locis dignis nota; R. Varia lectio petita ex Adversariis viri docti et multiscii Delrii; Mart. Correctio sive conjectura Delrii; A. Aldi editio. Anni 1517; P. Parisiensium editio. Anni -; G. Gryphii sive Lugdunensium, Anni 1581; B. Basilensium. Anni -; these indications are partly retaken at the end [on page 382]: Parisiense exemplar impressum Anno 1581; Basiliense [15]63; Aldinum [15]17; Lugdunense [15]81; Manuscriptus chartaceus 1461) (the latter manuscript is to be identified with the one preserved in Museum Plantin-Moretus, Ms. O.B. 5.7: cf. Denucé, Manuscrits, no. 45, page 44). The editor must ultimately have decided to delete the marginal annotations and to eliminate the references to his sources. |
