Online bibliographical references
Note 1Collection of religious hymns and metric poems (in roman type), each followed by an explanation of the difficult words and sentences (in italic type). The author of the explanations is said to be Hermannus Torrentinus (perhaps to be identified with the grammarian and schoolmaster H. van Beek, of Zwolle, who taught c. 1490 in Groningen and must have died c. 1520; nothing in his known works, however, shows that he had a particular interest in religious matters; more likely is meant another Van Beek or Van der Beken, living about 1560).
Note 2Of the saints mentioned many are specific for the archbishopric of Cologne. The work even ends with 'Sequentia de patronis Coloniensium': the publication must have been conceived for Cologne (and the eastern parts of the Netherlands under the spiritual jurisdiction of Cologne).
Note 3According to the colophon the printing was finished on 22 September 1562. This poses an odd problem as earlier in that year Plantin's goods had been seized and he himself obliged to seek safety in Paris: in September 1562 the Plantin Press was idle and the typographical material sold. The date, consequently, should perhaps be changed into 22 September 1561.
Note 4RDB specifies: 'Hymni et Prosae Ecclesiasticae, vulgo Sequentiae dictae, breviuscula quidem, sed maxime commoda Hermanni Torrentini explanatione illustrati. Antverpiae, ex officina Christophori Plantini, 1562'. This implies a title-page with Plantin's address, but the only two known copies have title-pages with Silvius's imprint. In these years, however, Plantin often printed editions in which a number of copies received a title-page with the imprint of the colleagues who took a rather large part of the edition. This was also very likely the case with the Hymni et prosae ecclesiasticae: the existence of copies with Plantin's address may be accepted.
Note 5Listed in M 296, folio 8v (Hymni et prosȩ ecclesiast. in 8º, aº 1561, f[euilles] 8, [price:] stuivers 1½).
