Note 2 In a letter to Maximilian Morillon, 3 May 1570, Plantin tells how Thomas Gozaeus, professor in theology at Louvain University, asked him to publish the works of the churchfathers and how the printer gladly accepted (Correspondance de C. Plantin, II, no. 226). In the foreword to the first volume of the Opera S. Augustini, dated 10 September 1576, Joannes Molanus explains what happened then: Gozaeus started collating the works of St. Augustinus, but died on 8 March 1571. Joannes Molanus, successor to Gozaeus as royal censor, was asked by Plantin to continue the work. Molanus accepted to lead the enterprise, but divided the work: the collation and correction of the first volume was entrusted to Martinus Baccius (who by 1576 had become a priest at Alost); volume 2 to Jacobus Baius, president of the College of Savoie at Louvain; volume 3 to Henricus Cuyckius, professor in Ethics at Louvain; volume 4 to Embertus Everaerds, priest of the Church of St. James; volume 5 to Petrus Coretus (who by 1576 had become a professor at Crispin); volume 6 to Christophorus Broide (who by 1576 had become dean at Aire); volume 7 to Henricus Gravius, professor at Louvain; volume 8 to Claudius Porta, priest and canon at Binche; volume 9 to Guilielmus Estius; volume 10 to the canons of the St. Martin Abbey at Louvain (where Martinus Lipsius and his pupils Joannes Costerius and Joannes Vlimmerius had already worked on the subject; the latter was able to add several 'sermones' of St. Augustinus he had found in manuscripts of the Cambron Abbey). Molanus reserved for himself the verification of the authenticity of the works attributed to St. Augustinus ('Illud autem mihi reservavi, singulis ut Augustini libris, quod in manuscripts observatum est, retractationem ipsius, aut, si ea deesset, brevem censuram multorum theologorum sententia confirmatam praemitterem. Quae vero manifeste deprehensa constat Augustini non esse, ea praemissis censuris in Appendice sui tomi reponenda censui'). Molanus took care to have his work verified by the professors Henricus Gravius and Laurentius Westerhovius. What Molanus didn't tell was that the making of the monumental indices (in volume 9) was commissioned by Plantin to Father David Regius, of the Bogards at Antwerp. Some brief remarks on the work on St. Augustinus by J. Vlimmerius (and Martinus Lipsius) and E. Everaerds in H. de Vocht, History of the Foundation and the Rise of the Collegium Trilingue Lovaniense, 1517-1550, III, 1954, pages 74-75, and IV, 1955, page 479.
Note 3 The theologians in charge of the gigantic work collated and verified hundreds of manuscripts. Molanus in his foreword speaks of 30 manuscripts from the library of the Abbey of Gembloux, 30 from Cambron Abbey, 20 from Aulne Abbey, 8 from Floreffe Abbey, 31 from St. Martin at Tournai, 32 from St. Amand Abbey, besides an unspecified number from Louvain institutions (Theology College; Jesuits; Carthusians; Park Abbey; St. Martin; Bethlehem). Joannes Gravius sent a manuscript with letters of St. Augustinus from Rome (see also the letter of Plantin to Gravius, 1 January 1575: Correspondance de C. Plantin, IV, no. 599).
Note 4 According to Rooses, M. Musée Plantin-Moretus, pages 216-217, the actual printing started on 2 May 1575. At first one compositor worked on the job; a second joined him in June, a third and a fourth in July, a fifth and a sixth in October; the work was printed by two 'pressiers' (two presses? or one press worked by two men?). Rooses very likely compiled these details from Arch. 32 (Livre des Ouvriers, 1571-79); when he adds that the first six volumes were finished at the end of 1575 he must refer to a passage in a letter from Plantin to Arias Montanus, December 1575 (Correspondance de C. Plantin, V, no. 687). In fact the printing schedule has been somewhat different. In the agreement with Mylius, 20 January 1575 (Correspondance de C. Plantin, IV, no. 604), Plantin promised to start the work with 4 presses (meaning the collaboration of at least 8 compositors) in April; and in a letter of 20 April 1575 he actually declared he was busy with 4 presses on the job (Correspondance de C. Plantin, IV, no. 621). In the colophons of most of the volumes is stated when they finished: vol. 2 on 18 April 1576, volume 3 on 3 April 1576, volume 4 on 21 September 1576, volume 5 on 6 June 1576, volume 6 on 5 January 1576 (= an error for 1577), volume 7 on 1 March 1577, volume 8 in 1576 (without further specification), volume 9 (first part) on 23 November 1576, volume 10 on 22 August 1576. The introductory volume must have been achieved after 19 February 1577 (date of the Parisian privilege). Not a single volume, consequently, had left the presses at the end of 1575: what Plantin probably meant in his letter to Arias Montanus was that six volumes were well advanced, not that they were already printed. The Indices (second part of volume 9) were the last part to be finished (September 1577): David Regius had not been very quickly on the job, as Joannes Moretus complained to Mylius in November 1576 (Correspondance de C. Plantin, V, no. 747).
Note 5 In Arch. 9, folios 65 recto-68 recto, precious details are given about the financial side of the publication. In all 1,000 copies were printed and 250 extra-copies of volume 5 (De Civitate Dei). For the 1,000 copies 3,015 reams 11 'mains' of paper were used, which, at 50 stuivers per ream, meant an expense of 7,538 florins Carolus guilders 10½ stuivers The wages for composing and printing came to 4,052 florins Carolus guilders 4 stuivers (subdivided: 25 stuivers per ream for the actual texts; 35 stuivers per ream for the 'appendices' and the notes in volume 7; 38 stuivers per ream for the Indices), bringing the total to 11,900 fl 15½ stuivers - but entered by PLantin as 11,591 florins Carolus guilders 1½ stuivers The 250 extra-copies of volume 5 came to 213 florins Carolus guilders 15 stuivers (142 florins Carolus guilders 10 stuivers for the 57 reams of paper; 71 florins Carolus guilders 5 stuivers for the printing, at 25 stuivers per ream). Collating the copies costed 40 florins Carolus guilders, whilst 27 florins Carolus guilders 6 stuivers are entered for work on the premises by a carpenter. Printed copies of former editions of the works of St. Augustinus 'envoyés à Louvain pour faire la collation' were purchased for 87 florins Carolus guilders (two copies from Paris: 45 florins Carolus guilders, and two from Germany: 42 florins Carolus guilders); the privileges were paid 24 florins Carolus guilders (the two issued at Brussels 12 florins Carolus guilders together, the one issued at Paris 12 florins Carolus guilders); the total costs of the illustrations (the frontispiece and title-page in volume 1) came to 52 florins Carolus guilders (6 florins Carolus guilders to Crispin van den Broeck for the design; 36 florins Carolus guilders to the unknown engraver; 10 florins Carolus guilders for printing 1,000 copies of each engraving). The scholars working on St. Augustinus received remunerations for their expenses and work: 139 florins Carolus guilders were paid to Gozaeus and another 25 florins Carolus guilders to his heirs; the sixty 'licentiés et bacheliers' who aided in collating the manuscripts were each awarded 6 florins Carolus guilders, making 360 florins Carolus guilders; the 9 doctors in theology, responsible for the edition, were given 24 florins Carolus guilders each, making 216 florins Carolus guilders David Regius received 204 florins Carolus guilders 6½ stuivers and the three assistants who had helped him with the index 126 florins Carolus guilders 14 stuivers This came to a grand total, as entered by Plantin (he made some errors in adding the totals), of 13,005 florins Carolus guilders 11½ stuivers Not counted by Plantin in this grand total was the substantial sum of 601 florins Carolus guilders 7½ stuivers for travel expenses and the shipment of the manuscripts used for the collation. His cost-accounting note, however, was in fact made about the middle of 1577 before the complete finishing of the Indices in volume 9 and the additional notes to volume 7: the paper and printing costs for these parts have to be added. As also some additional expenses paid to Joannes Harlemius (in 1570-1572), Molanus and Vlimmerius (Arch. 16, opening 138 left and right, 178 left and right, 198 left and right; Arch. 18, opening 32 left and right, 199 left and right; cf. also Arch. 18, opening 200 left and 262 left and right; much later, on 23 March 1586, Plantin had an argument with Vlimmerius on the non-payment of certain bills to Molanus and Henricus Cuyckius: Correspondance de C. Plantin, VII, no. 1082), and his own proof-reader, A. Spithals, who had worked for 14 weeks on the Index Augustini, and, at 2 florins Carolus guilders 14 stuivers per week, received 37 florins Carolus guilders 16 stuivers on 20 August 1577 (Arch. 32, folio 276 recto). Plantin in his agreement with Mylius (see below) put the total expenses at 13,565 florins Carolus guilders 16 stuivers
Note 6 For this very expensive publication Plantin made a deal with the Cologne publisher Arnold Mylius: on 20 January 1575 they agreed that the latter should take half the edition, whilst paying half of the paper and half of the printing expenses (Correspondance de C. Plantin, IV, no. 604). An amendment was made on 16 January 1576: Plantin let 100 copies to be ceded by Mylius to Geoffroy Birckman and his companions at Cologne (Correspondance de C. Plantin, V, no. 697). Mylius's part (including his extra copies of the De Civitate Dei and the 100 copies ceded to the Birckmans) amounted to 6,782 florins Carolus guilders 18 stuivers, which he paid in installments from 22 January 1575 till 10 December 1577 (Arch. 19, opening 69 left). It had been agreed in January 1575 that one of the two parties should distribute all the copies; in the agreement of 16 January 1576 Mylius was noted as the sole distributor, but, finally, both publishers each sold their own copies. Years later Plantin had an argument with Mylius about the St. Augustinus. The reasons for the dispute are not very clear, but in his letter of end December 1581 Plantin tells his former partner that, whilst Mylius received his due share of 500 copies, Plantin had had to bear all the losses (…'des pertes faictes audict logis ne des imperfections tant de l'imprimerie que des feilles mangees, rompues et rongees par les rats et autrement audict logis'). Investigating carefully the matter, he came to the rather astonishing conclusion that finally he had only retained for himself 390 complete copies. Climbing in person to the storage place in the attic he found some 60 reams of paper in defects, including 12 copies lacking only the Index. He had this index and some other missing sheets reprinted, at an expense of more than 100 florins Carolus guilders, in order to make an additional number of 18 complete Opera (Correspondance de C. Plantin, VII, no. 970). If this statement may be taken at its face-value there must be two editions of the Index, the second one reduced to only 12 copies.
Note 7 The work is dedicated by Plantin to the Italian cardinals Christophorus and Ludovicus Madrutius; on this subject cf. Correspondance de C. Plantin, V, nos. 687, 730, 738; Supplément Correspondance de C. Plantin, no. 132.
Note 8 The publication is mentioned in a great number of letters and documents published in Correspondance de C. Plantin, some of which have been quoted above. The complete list reads thus: Correspondance de C. Plantin, IV, nos. 492, 570, 599, 604, 615, 621; V, nos. 655, 687, 697, 702, 704, 730, 736, 738, 745, 747, 750, 754, 765, 775, 782, 787, 796; VI, no. 858; VII, nos. 970, 1082; Supplément Correspondance de C. Plantin, nos. 132, 138. An interesting note on the edition in Rooses, M. Musée Plantin-Moretus, pages 216-217.
