The Spanish version was first published (together with a reprint of the first and second books) in Sevilla by Fernando Diaz, 1574 (Palau y Dulcet, no. 175487). |
| Note 2 | In the dedicatory to Sidney and Dier, Clusius gives interesting details about his translation. He explains how, on his departure from England, he saw an English version translated from Spanish of the work of Monardes. The first two books he knew, having translated them himself into Latin some eight years before, but the third book he had not yet seen and did find it interesting enough to have it translated and published in Latin. Having obtained in London a Spanish copy of the book, he made the translation when waiting at Gravesend to cross the Channel: 'Hispanicum igitur exemplar C.V. Hectoris Nunez Londinensis medici opera nactus, dum in Belgium properantem adversi venti Gravesandae aliquamdiu detinent, et in medio etiam ȩquore navis qua velubar cursum impediunt, ut istius morae taedium fallerem, tum istic, tum inter nauticos clamores latinum feci, seriem capitum (quorum nonnulla non infrugiferis, ut spero, annotatiunculis illustravi) fere ubique immutans, rerum quae in iis continentur simili natura ita postulante'. |
