Note 1 | One of the many 'zendbrieven' (circular letters) of H. Niclaes (figuring as no. 10 in the collection of 20 letters of Niclaes published in Cologne in 1577: cf. de la Fontaine Verwey, page 197, no. 43). |
Note 2 | According to de la Fontaine Verwey printed by Plantin between 1555-1562. First known edition. |
Note 3 | Hamilton attributes this edition to Augustijn Van Hasselts press in Kampen and not to Plantin. Furthermore, he states the book was printed in c. 1561. (Hamilton, The Family of Love, 137) |
Note 4 | According to Blouw, it is quite likely that a considerable number of works authored by Hedrik Niclaes attributed to Plantin were in fact not printed by him but by Augustijn van Hasselt in Kampen. The reason for this being the dangers regarding the printing of nonconformist books in Antwerp in this period. Plantin, however, almost certainly was involved in the printing process by supplying Augustijn van Hasselt with the types he needed. (Blouw, Dutch Typography, 64) |
