Note 1 Sentences, advices and precepts of the 'seven sages' of Greece (Thales, Solon, Chilo, Pittacus, Bias, Cleobulus, Periander), in French and Dutch translations (on one page the French text, on the facing page the Dutch text), followed, pages [164-175], in French and Dutch, by some considerations on the utility of 'dictz des bons et sages notables'.
Note 2 The French text is the reprint or adaptation of a French edition. The first known edition was issued in Paris, Gilles Corrozet, 1544, with the title Conseil des sept sages de la Grèce; ensemble le Miroer de prudence, tout mis en francoys, avec une briefve et familiere exposition sur chascune autorité et sentence. It was often reprinted, under varying titles: Lyons, Jean de Tournes, 1547; Paris, Jean Ruelle, 1548; Paris, Est. Groulleau, 1554 (cf. Brunet, II, Column 232). The Dutch text is very likely a translation of the French text made in Antwerp at the request of the publisher.
Note 3 Printed for the Antwerp publisher, Jan van Waesberghe, by Plantin, as stated in the colophon.
Note 4 Not listed in the Plantinian catalogues.
