| Note 1 | Greek edition of 12 epistles of St. Ignatius. It forms one volume with the Latin translation of the Epistles by Vairlenius (see cp010130), presented as a separate edition but normally sold together. |
| Note 2 | The Greek text, edited by Valentinus Pacaeus, following a manuscript belonging to Prince Ferdinand August, was first published in Dillingen by Siboldus Maier in 1557. It was reprinted by Gulielmus Morellius in Paris in 1558, accompanied by a Latin translation. The dedicatory of Vairlenius suggests that for Plantin’s edition the 1558 Parisian publication was followed. |
| Note 3 | Hieronymus Vairlenius (Verlenius; ’s Hertogenbosch, 1511—Haarlem, 1589; licentiate in theology at Louvain; taught for some years at the grammar school in his native’s Hertogenbosch; from 1557 until 1566 priest of St. James in Utrecht; in 1566 vicar-general and official of Haarlem. Cf. Biographie Nationale [de Belgique], 26, 1936-38, Columns 664-666; H. de Vocht, History of the Foundation and the Rise of the Collegium Trilingue Lovaniense, 1517-1550, IV, 1955, pages 162-164) made the Latin translation and the annotations (scholia). Very likely he supervised also the Greek text for the Plantin-edition. In the dedicatory to Lindanus, Vairlenius cites the Dillingen- and Paris-editions, but he was not satisfied with the Latin translation as given in the Morellius-publication and made a new one. He also warns that he did not include four epistles (two to St. John the Evangelist, one to the Blessed Virgin, and one from the Blessed Virgin to Ignatius), formerly ascribed to Ignatius, but not found in the Greek manuscript as published in Dillingen and Paris. |

| Note 5 | The cost-accounting note in Arch. 4, folio 99 verso, enters on 22 June 1566 the wages for composing and printing of both ‘Ignatii Epistolae Lat.’ (quires A-E: 9 florins Carolus guilders) and ‘Ignatii Epistolae Graece’ (quires A-D: 10 florins Carolus guilders), together 19 florins Carolus guilders ‘Latin et Grec sont 9 feilles ensemble’; 800 copies were printed, for which 14 reams 18 ‘mains’ of paper ‘petit bastard’ were used, which, at 1 florins Carolus guilders 8 stuivers per ream, came to 20 florins Carolus guilders 17 stuivers, bringing the overall costs to 39 florins Carolus guilders 17 stuivers ‘Qui est la pièce grec et latin 2 stuivers’. |
