Note 1 | Reprint of the 1583 French edition, but with some important changes, due to the in the meantime modified political climate. The 1583 edition was largely devoted to Francis, Duke of Anjou and Alençon, the new sovereign of the Netherlands for these parts of the country which sided with the rebels: his secretary, Cl. de Treles, made the translation and in a dedicatory sonnet praised the Duke; moreover, a portrait of the Duke, as 37th count of Holland and Zeeland, had been included. In this 1586-edition everything that reminded of Duke Francis has been eliminated: his portrait, the sonnet and the letter of de Treles to Ortelius; and even the name of de Treles on the title-page. |
Note 2 | The letterpress part was printed by Plantin for Philip Galle, who supplied and printed the copperplates, and was in fact the publisher. |
Note 3 | Not listed in the Plantinian catalogues (M 296, M 164, and M 321). |
