Note 1 Sixth (?) edition of the complete works of Horatius published by Plantin. These Opera include: Odarum seu carminum libri IIII (pages 5-88), Epodon liber (pages 89-107), Satyrarum libri II (pages 108-158), Epistolarum libri II (pages 159-196), De arte poetica (pages 196-207).
Note 2 Text without notes. The 1576-edition of Pulmannus seems to have been followed.
Note 3 This volume forms part of a series of small pocket-books in 24mo of classical authors, which Plantin started in 1585 with the publication of Juvenalis.
Note 4 The dedicatory to Arias Montanus is reproduced in Correspondance de C. Plantin, VIII-IX, no. 1187.
Note 5 On 13 September 1586 Plantin wrote to Tisnacq (Correspondance de C. Plantin, VIII-IX, no. 1137): 'Le Virgile est achevé in 24to. Horace est commencé de mesme forme, de la milleure correction que scachions…'. In a letter to Arias Montanus of 23 December 1586 the shipment of a bound copy is announced (Correspondance de C. Plantin, VIII-IX, no. 1179: 'Praecedenti siquidem die [= 11 December] Horatiolum tibi dicatum inscriptumque in pergameno compactum miseram…'. The publication is mentioned in some other letters mailed in those months by Plantin and J. Moretus to de Çayas, Tisnacq and Arias Montanus: Correspondance de C. Plantin, VIII-IX, nos. 1197 (15 January 1587), 1198 (18 January 1587), 1236 (27 March 1587), 1263 (3-7 June 1587), 1303 (16 September 1587), 1328 (27 November 1587), 1349 (18 February 1588). In these letters the wording Horatiolus is frequently used.
Note 6 The formula on the title-page 'Apud Christophorum Plantinum' and the printer's mark used make it clear that the edition was in fact printed at the Officina Plantiniana Francisci Raphelengii in Leiden. It is possible that, as was usually done for these publications, a number of copies received a title-page with the Leiden-imprint. No such copy is known. Moreover, as the publication is dedicated to Arias Montanus, who, as a Spanish theologian, was not particularly liked in the North, it may be accepted that in fact the whole edition received a title-page with Plantin's Antwerp address.
Note 7 Listed in M 321 (under 1586, 24º, f[euilles] 4½; price: 2½ stuivers). Not noted in M 296.
