Note 1 | Series of 14 ‘pious exercises’. |
Note 2 | In the dedicatory, dated 28 April 1568, the author tells how some years ago, having forwarded his ‘pious exercises’ to some people who were interested in it, his manuscript was printed at Cologne without his knowledge, preceded by an introductory letter falsely attributed to Laurentius Surius. As the author explains in another passage his text was printed together with the Exercitia of [Joannes] Thaulerus. Owing to the fact that at the time of the publication he was away from Cologne, Eschius was not able to prevent the divulgation of this spurious edition. He had, however, to take the blame for some inaccuracies in the text and more especially in the dedicatory letter attributed to Surius. So finally, to set the record straight, he decided to have a corrected version published under his name. |
Note 3 | The spurious edition referred to by Eschius was published for the first time at Cologne in 1548. It was reprinted at least two times affirms Eschius in the dedicatory. One of these reprints, very likely the last of the series, appeared at Antwerp in 1565, Apud Philippum Nutium, with the title Exercitia D. Ioannis Thauleri piissima, super vita et passione Salvatoris nostri Iesu Christi, in gratiam ac sitiensium salutem, ex idiomate Germanico in Latinum nuper versa. His eiusdem fere argumenti alia prorsus divina accesserunt, auctore D. Nicolao Eschio, non minus pio quam docto (copies in Museum Plantin-Moretus, A 470315 and 8-503). It may be supposed that it was this Antwerp 1565-reprint which moved Eschius to publish his revised edition. |
Note 4 | A comparison between the Antwerp 1565-edition and Plantin’s 1569-publication show that the differences are neither numerous nor important. Eschius must especially have been grieved for the introductory letter attributed to Surius and by some allusions in the texts of J. Lanspergius, which in the spurious editions are given as an appendix to Thaulerus and Eschius. |
Note 5 | In Arch. 31, folio 160, some technical details are noted about the publication: ‘Privil[ege] 21 Aoust 1568 ad sexen[nium] [= for 6 years] J. de Witte; commencé le 7 febvrier 1569 par Corneille Muller pour la forme 14 stuivers [= that is the compositor C. Muller started the work on 7 February 1569 and was paid 14 stuivers per forme]. Imprimé à 1250’. |
Note 6 | Listed in M 296, folio 5v (Exercitia quedam pia christiani hom[inis] Jo. Eschii, 16⁰, f[euilles] —, [price:] stuivers 1½), and M 164, folio 10v. |
