Note 1 | Commented Latin edition of the Book of Isaiah by Forerius: each chapter of Isaiah begins with two Latin translations (on two columns, in italic type), one (on the right column) being the 'vetus [translatio]' (= Vulgata-translation), the other (on the left column) the 'nova [translatio]' (= new translation made by Forerius from the Hebrew), and continues with a lengthy comment on this part of the text (in roman type). |
Note 2 | The work must have been achieved during Forerius's stay in Italy. The first edition was in any case published in Venice in 1563. The Nutius-edition is to all probability a reprint of this Venice-publication. |
Note 3 | The work was printed for Philippus Nutius by Plantin in 1565. For some reasons the year 1565 on the title-page has been changed in a number of copies into 1566 (see following no.), and in another number of copies into 1567 (see no. cp011960). These title-pages have not been reset; only the indication of the year has been adapted. This seems to point to the fact that when the printing started in 1565 it was decided from the beginning that, whilst a number of copies should have the year 1565, others would receive the years 1566 and 1567. Nutius anticipated perhaps a slow sale and wished to prevent in this manner that in 1566 and 1567 his publication would seem to be 'outdated'. |
Note 4 | The cost-accounting note in Arch. 4, folio 96, gives the following details about 'Forerius in Isaiam 8⁰ p[ou]r Nutius': the first wages for composing and printing are entered on 7 July [1565], the last on 13 October [1565], in all 112 florins Carolus guilders 1 stuivers; 144 reams 2 'mains' of 'papier petit bastard' were used, which, at 1 florins Carolus guilders 6 stuivers per ream, came to 187 florins Carolus guilders 4 stuivers, bringing the overall costs to 299 florins Carolus guilders 5 stuivers As each copy contains 56½ sheets and as 144 reams 2 'mains' were used, this meant that, taken into account the 'imperfections', some 1,250 copies were printed. |
Note 5 | On 1 June 1565 Plantin had received from Philippus Nutius an advance-sum of 240 florins Carolus guilders 'à bon compte sur le papier et impression de forerius que ie luy ay promis imprimer le plus tost que faire se pourra' (Arch. 36, page 91). |
Note 6 | Plantin charged 'Philippes Nuyts et heritiers…par forrerius' on 10 November 1565 for 144 reams 2 'mains' of printed texts, at 2 florins Carolus guilders 10 stuivers per ream (that is the costs for paper and printing), 360 florins Carolus guilders 4 stuivers (Arch. 3, folio 38). Nutius must have objected to the fact that a number of reams, used for 'imperfections', were counted for printed sheets. The bill was consequently somewhat reduced on 25 November 1565 (Arch. 3, folio 39): the number of printed reams was brought back to 141, which, at 2 florins Carolus guilders 10 stuivers per ream, came to 352 florins Carolus guilders 10 stuivers; the 3 reams of paper used 'pour les mains de surplus' were entered for 4 florins Carolus guilders 7 stuivers (at 1 florins Carolus guilders 9 stuivers per ream); the total did now amount to 356 florins Carolus guilders 17 stuivers |
