Note 1Early history of Ireland in four 'books' down to the time of Henry II, written from an English point of view (pages 3-218), followed by an annotated appendix of extracts from the Welsh 12th century historiographer Giraldus Cambrensis on Ireland (Rerum Hibernicarum appendix, ex Silvestro Giraldo Cambrensi, pervetusto scriptore collecta, cum Richardi Stanihursti adnotationibus; pages 219-264). The work is dedicated to Richard's brother-in-law, P. Plunket, baron Dunsany. The introductory pages of the History (pages 3-14) are in fact a dedicatory letter to Plunket.
Note 2The work was actually printed in Leiden, but a number of copies received a title-page with Plantin's Antwerp imprint.
Note 3In 1587, when in contact with Plantin about the publication of his Life of St. Patrick, Stanihurstus must have asked the typographer if a reprint of the History of Ireland could be considered. Plantin, in a letter of 30 June 1581, answered in the negative, recalling the fact that copies of the original edition were still available (Corr., VIII-IX, no. 1271).
Note 4'Richardi Stanihursti Historia hybernica, in 4⁰' figures in the list of books printed by Plantin in Leiden, a copy of which he presented to the Leiden magistrate on 2 January 1585 (this copy in Leiden University Libraries: cf. E. Hulshoff Pol, 'Boucken op 't secreet. Plantijndrukken op het raadhuis te Leiden' in Leids Jaarboekje, 1972, page 92.
