Note 1 | Religious treatise in Dutch on 'the life of the Christian virgins in four dialogues' (pages 9-303), followed by the Dutch translation of a treatise on a similar subject by St. Ambrosius 'written to a fallen virgin' (pages 306 [= for 307]-332 [= for 333]). |
Note 2 | This edition was in fact printed by Hendrik Alsens, a former pressman of Plantin, who had established himself in Antwerp as a master typographer. H. Alsens was paid, on 7 March 1571, for printing 'du livre des beghinne flameng' the quires t - v - x (= the last three) and A (= the first), being 12 reams (= meaning that 1,500 copies were printed), the sum of 9 florins Carolus guilders 12 stuivers On the preceding 17 October [1570] he had been paid for 17 sheets 'du Livre en flameng', at 16 stuivers per ream, and 51 reams delivered (= 1,500 copies), 40 florins Carolus guilders 16 stuivers This 'livre en flameng' may be identified with Lumnius's treatise. The sums paid to Alsens are only for the actual printing; the paper must have been supplied by Plantin (Arch. 31, folio 91). |
