Note 1 | Ordinance of Philip II, s. D'Overloepe, in French (pages 3-7), Dutch (pages 8-11; in gothic type), and Latin (pages 12-15), regarding the 'observation' of the Index librorum prohibitorum: the Council of Trente had compiled a Catalogue of Forbidden Books, to which Philip II added an appendix; order is now given that all books prohibited by those Indices should be burned within three months after the publication of the ordinance. The ordinance is dated 15 February 1569, but this date is very likely given in 'Brabant style' old style and has to be read 15 February 1570, as also the date of the privilege (16 February 1569 = 16 February 1570). |
Note 2 | The ordinance is presented as a separate edition, but forms in fact the introductory part to the Index librorum prohibitorum of 1570, with which it is normally found together (more especially the edition containing 112 pages). |
Note 3 | The Index librorum prohibitorum of 1570 has been published in two different editions. The Edictum was also printed in two different versions, but when resetting the text, the compositor followed his copy so carefully that the two editions differ only in very small details (e.g. in the Edictum accompanying the 112 pages edition: on the title-page after 'Ex officina Christophori Plantini' a point, which is missing in the other version; on page [13] Coriae, whilst the other version has Coria; on page [16] D'Overloepe, whilst the other has D'Overloope). |
