| Note 1 | Translation into Dutch by Dirck Volckertsz Coornhert (he is not explicitly cited but an acrostic on his name figures in 'Aan den lezer, op des dichters naam' [To the reader, on the name of the poet]) of Furmerius's De rerum usu et abusu, as published by Plantin and Galle in 1575. In this translation, however, the name of Furmerius is nowhere quoted. Cf. on this translation B. | Note 2 | Four variants of the work are known: A) Without illustrations (Variant IV). This edition is limited to the Dutch translation by Coornhert of the 25 allegorical poems of Furmerius and of the 4 lines poems which figure underneath each illustration in the 1575-edition (each poem occupies one page; first comes the quatrain in civilité type, followed by the poem proper in gothic type); B) With illustrations. These are printed on one side of a page (the illustrations accompanying the poems with uneven numeration [nos. cp011942, 3,...] printed on the verso-side of a page, the ones accompanying the poems with even numeration [nos. cp011396, 4,...] on the recto-side of a page), together with the reproduction of the Latin texts accompanying the 1575-illustrations (above the illustration: caption and quotation from the Bible; underneath: 4 lines Latin poem). The sheets with the illustrations form in fact a separate section which could be bound together with Coornhert's translation - or could be left aside (as was the case in the not-illustrated edition quoted above). The variants in the editions with illustrations are limited to the title-page; and in fact only to the left (or abnormal) title-page, the right (or normal) one being identical in all copies (in Dutch: title and Plantin's Leiden address). The left one has the engraved title-page of Furmerius's 1575-edition, printed on the verso-side of a sheet, with above the Latin title De rerum usu et abusu (but without quoting the name of Furmerius). The differences are in the texts (or the absence of texts) underneath: Plantin's Leiden address (in Latin) (Variant I); Plantin's Antwerp address (in Latin) (Variant II); no address (Variant III). |
| Note 3 | The plates of the Furmerius 1575-edition were the joint property of Plantin and Galle, and very likely remained in Antwerp. To all probability Coornhert's translation was printed in Leiden, whilst the illustrations were reproduced in Galle's Antwerp studio and shipped to Holland. |
